What Happened

Railways has doubled the penalty for violating cleanliness rules to Rs 1,000. The revised rules apply to passengers and others on railway premises, with littering, spitting and defacing railway property among the activities that can attract the higher penalty. Failure to pay the penalty may result in court proceedings and a fine of up to Rs 2,000.
